Corpi celesti: Oman through the voice of Jokha Alharthi
The first novel written in Arabic to win the Man Booker International Prize, in 2019, Celestial Bodies tells the story of Oman through three sisters, Mayya, Asma’ and Khawla, and four generations of women. Marriage, motherhood, and the tension between tradition and modernity: Jokha Alharthi portrays a country that abolished slavery only in 1970 and has undergone rapid change ever since.
Yet the author is not content simply to recount progress. She brings to light the contradictions and the past that collective memory has preferred to erase.
We discuss these themes with Giacomo Longhi, the translator who has brought Alharthi’s voice to Italian readers.
Venue: Room G.142, first floor, Lanzone 14 building, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Largo Gemelli 1.
